Persuasion : Love, Regret, and Second Chances

Persuasion
Persuasion

This is the first book from the author to me. Earlier also I tried to read one of her famous novel “Pride and Prejudice” but I couldn’t complete it. So technically “Persuasion” is the first book from the author that I competed. This book was published in year 1817 after few months of her death.

Moving to the story part, “Persuasion” is all about love, separation and then second chance. Main character is Anne Elliot, second daughter of sir Walter. Walter has three daughters, Elizabeth, Anne and Mary. Sir Walter is an impractical upper class person and allows himself to be seen in the public only with attractive or well known people. But Anne is a practical and humble women unlike her other sisters and father. Anne views Lady Russell, a distant relative, as her second mother.

Anne is in love with Frederick Wentworth but seven years ago they got separated because according to Anne’s family Wentworth is from low class. But in these seven years Wentworth made his name and fortune by rising in the naval ranks.

Sir Walter’s lavish lifestyle put his family into debt due to which they had to move to other place in order to reduce their debt. They rented a home to an admiral and his wife.

Anne goes to upper cross to live with her sister for sometime. And there captain Wentworth and Anne met again. There is a fare chance for Anne’s love with Captain to grow and this can be second chance for their marriage.but will their destiny be same or change this time? For this you should read the book.

This book was very well received. And there has been many adaptation of this book like In 1997, “Persuasion” , a made for television film in United Kingdom, In 2007,  “Persuasion”, a television file, then in 2020 “Modern Persuasion”, a film in which Persuasion is modernised and story is retold, then in 2022, “Persuasion”, a Netflix film. Persuasion has been adapted for television mini-series also.

The storyline is straightforward and good. Character development is also good but I got confused sometimes. I loved the character of Anne and how is centre of the book. The story felt like real and the flow is also good. Overall I enjoyed “Persuasion” but didn’t find a wow factor in it.
